This can end California's prison overcrowding crisis
California is in a prison overcrowding crisis with widespread hunger strikes making headlines all over the country. But SB 649 can help, and we're close to putting it on Gov. Brown's desk!
Sen. Mark Leno's Senate Bill 649, which has already passed the Senate, would move California toward a smarter, more humane, cost-effective justice system. It would reduce overcrowding in our prisons by allowing prosecutors to charge non-violent drug possession as a misdemeanor, rather than as a felony.
Right now, there are 4,000 inmates in California prisons simply for possessing a small amount of drugs intended for personal use. We can do better.
