Drop the Top Two Primary!
We may have averted disaster on June 5, but it’s past time for California to drop the misguided, ineffective, and undemocratic Top Two primary system.
The Top Two primary could lead to electing a Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic district or shut Democrats out of a key swing district -- if enough Democratic candidates split the vote between them. That actually happened in 2014, and it must never happen again.
The Top Two primary disadvantages candidates from every political party. It’s no wonder there’s mounting political pressure to drop the Top Two primary. Even representatives as ideologically diverse as Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) have spoken out in agreement. Please join Courage Campaign in calling on the California State Legislature to help end the Top Two primary system.
Below is the text of the petition we’ll send to the California State Legislature on your behalf:
“I’m calling on you to drop the Top Two primary. The Top Two primary was sold as a way of making elections less partisan. This misguided law has not only failed at its stated objectives, it has made our elections less fair, less representative, and increased the role of money in politics. I ask that you immediately pass a measure to bring a Top Two repeal vote to Californians.”
