Tell CA Gov. Brown: Stop Big Oil from poisoning our crops with toxic wastewater
The Los Angeles Times just exposed that California farmers are using oil-contaminated wastewater to grow a portion of our nation’s crops. And the oil industry is making MILLIONS of dollars in profits in return.
Chevron has been selling polluted water from its oil extraction business to drought-stricken farmers who are desperate for water, and getting away with it. Meanwhile, the American public has been eating potentially toxic crops.
How? Government authorities and local water boards are enforcing decades-old monitoring standards from before recycled oil wastewater was used to irrigate our crops. They don’t even test for toxic chemicals! And scientists just found methylene chloride and arsenic -- known carcinogens -- in this wastewater.
What’s even scarier is that even more oil companies are seeking permits to begin similar programs. We have to stop this NOW before it’s too late!
SIGN THE PETITION and tell CA Governor Jerry Brown:
“The recent news that Chevron is selling billions of gallons of toxic, oil-contaminated wastewater to CA farmers for irrigation is frightening and alarming. I ask that you use your executive authority to immediately halt this practice until rigorous testing can be done. We must ensure the water we use to grow California’s crops is clean, healthy, and safe for the food our state and country eats.”
