Tell Governor Brown: Sign the Racial and Identity Profiling Act
No one should be stopped by police solely based on the color of his or her skin. But in California, Blacks and Latinos are stopped by police at three and two times the rate of whites, respectively -- in large part due to our deeply flawed racial/identity profiling law. However, a landmark bill just passed the California Legislature that could fundamentally fix the broken law and reduce the epidemic of profiling and police brutality that has been impeding the lives and freedom of far too many people of color and minorities in California.
RIGHT NOW, we must be louder than ever to help overcome the powerful law enforcement lobbyists who are banging on Governor Brown’s door AS WE SPEAK, trying to convince him to veto this landmark bill.
AB 953 (by Assemblymember Shirley Weber) will help eliminate the harmful and unjust practice of racial and identity profiling, and improve law enforcement transparency and accountability. It will:
- clarify and modernize CA’s existing racial and identity profiling laws;
- enhance law enforcement training on fair and impartial policing;
- create a system for collecting and reporting basic information on police-community interactions;
- and establish an advisory board that develops solutions to curb profiling.
SIGN ON to tell Governor Jerry Brown:
“Please sign the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (AB 953 by Asm. Weber) to help eliminate the harmful and unjust practice of racial and identity profiling and improve law enforcement transparency and accountability."
