SIGN THE PETITION: Repeal the Maximum Family Grant

For more than two decades, California has maintained a policy that denies financial support to children born into families that are already receiving basic needs grants through California’s financial assistance program, CalWORKs.

This policy, known as the Maximum Family Grant (MFG) rule, was created to coerce poor mothers into having less children. Instead, this unjust, invasive policy has forced nearly 140,000 of California’s children deeper into poverty simply because they were born poor. And it continues to threaten the reproductive freedom and privacy of thousands of women.

California is one of only 16 states that still has a backwards policy like this. Rather than helping lift low-income families out of poverty, MFG makes it that much harder for families to get back on their feet. It often forces families to stay on financial assistance much longer than they would have otherwise. It’s past time for California to catch up to the rest of the nation and repeal it.

SIGN THE PETITION and tell Governor Jerry Brown and California state leaders:

"California must stop punishing children born into poverty. Make fully funding the repeal of the CalWORKs Maximum Family Grant rule a top priority in this year's budget."
