Tell Mayors Garcetti and Garcia: Put an end to lawbreaking for profit at the Ports of LA and Long Beach
Roughly 40% of our country’s imported goods land on the shores of Los Angeles and Long Beach. But our port truck drivers -- who deliver goods to businesses that millions of Americans shop at everyday -- are having their wages and rights STOLEN out from under them!
Unscrupulous trucking companies are able to short change drivers by misclassifying them as "independent contractors" instead of "employees." This allows them to avoid paying a fair living wage and prevent their drivers from qualifying for ANY safety-net services and basic rights that every day Americans rely on -- such as unemployment benefits, health insurance, workers’ compensation, union representation, or the ability to earn overtime pay.
It’s shameful. And we as consumers need to stand with these hard-working Californians and urge our progressive leaders -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia -- to join us and give our port truckers the rights and wages they deserve!
Sign the petition and ask LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia:
"Please support our port workers and end lawbreaking-for-profit at the Ports of LA and Long Beach. Our port drivers deliver roughly 40% of the imported goods that we use every day, and they deserve to be paid a fair living wage and treated with dignity and respect."
