Make Sacramento take a step toward ending the War on Drugs
UPDATE: Senate Bill 1506 failed to pass out of the Senate in May of 2012. We will continue to work toward these common sense reforms.
Senate Bill 1506 would revise the law to treat the possession of drugs for personal use as a misdemeanor, rather than as a felony.
Why is this bill so smart?
- It saves $1 billion over five years by reducing prison and jail spending.
- It allows local and state government to dedicate resources to probation, drug treatment and mental health services, which have proven most effective in reducing crime.
- It frees up law enforcement resources to focus on more serious offenders.
We need to safely reduce jail overspending and overcrowding, and Sen. Leno's SB 1506 does just that. Studies show that in the 13 states that classify drug possession as a misdemeanor, treatment rates are higher, incarceration rates are lower, and crime rates are unaffected either way.
Sign the petition on the left and tell Sacramento: "Pass common-sense drug sentencing reform (SB 1506). Treat addiction, don't label people felons for life."
