Gov. Brown: Sign LIFE Act gun safety bills

Key bills from the LIFE (Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement) Act sit on Gov. Brown's desk. He must made a decison by Sunday. With the stroke of a pen, he could give California the smartest, safest gun laws in the nation, but he has a poor track record when it comes to gun safety.

Since the Newtown massacre last December, 1,143 Californians have died from gun violence, five in the rampage at Santa Monica College in June. Thanks to the gun lobby, we already lost SB 396, which would have outlawed the possession of high-capacity magazines in California. We must convince Gov. Brown to sign SB 374 (a loophole-free assault weapons ban) and SB 755 (an expansion of the list of crimes that make it illegal to own a gun, based on proven correlations between certain crimes and violent behavior).

Since the Newtown massacre last December, 1,143 Californians have died from gun violence, five in the rampage at Santa Monica College in June. Thanks to laws passed in California over the last 20 years, gun violence is down 56%, but we can do even better while respecting the 2nd Amendment with laws that even Justice Scalia would find constitutional.

SB 374 will finally give California a true assault weapons ban, a strategy that has proven powerfully effective at reducing gun violence around the world and limiting the carnage of rampage shooters. SB 755 will keep guns out of the hands of people who have proven to lack the judgement necessary to carry a firearm and help prevent more commonplace tragedies of gun violence.
