No More Super-Delegates: Party leaders should never trump the will of the voters
Under the current Democratic Party nominating rules, 712 "super-delegates" -- elected officials and well-connected members of the party -- are free to support any candidate for the presidential nomination at the party's national convention. They have the power to overrule the will of voters in a close contest.
This undermines numerous values of the Democratic Party including:
- the concept of one person, one vote
- gender equity, as a near super-majority of super-delegates are men
- racial justice and racial diversity proportionately, 20% fewer of this year’s super-delegates hail from communities of color than was true of the voters who supported President Obama in those years’ general elections.
In short, the super-delegate system is unrepresentative, contradicts the purported values of the party and its members, and reduces the party’s moral authority.
