Sen. de Leon: Stop non-profit hospitals from putting PROFITS before patient care

Non-profit hospitals in California have made a mockery of their tax-exempt status for far too long. Every year these so-called charitable hospitals bring home billions of dollars in profits, avoid billions in taxes, and cheat poor communities out of desperately needed care.

It’s outrageous and we must have the courage to hold these hospitals accountable!

Assembly Bill 503 helps solve the problem by defining “community benefit” and increasing the amount of charity care required for non-profit hospitals to keep their tax-exempt status. It ensures that charity care goes towards care to the poor and uninsured, NOT promotional activities to generate more profit. It's a smart and fair piece of legislation, and we need your courage to fight the corporate lobbyists trying to kill it.

Right now this bill is stuck in the Senate Appropriations Committee, and it will stay there unless members like you have the courage to speak out and ask Appropriations Chairman, Senator Kevin de Leon, to bring it to the Senate floor for a full vote.

SIGN THE PETITION to ask Chairman de Leon:

“Please do the right thing and hold an up or down vote on Assembly Bill 503. California’s non-profit hospitals must stop putting profits before patient care and be held accountable for taking advantage of taxpayers like me.”
