Tell Asm. Mike Gipson: Stand up for the will of your constituents, not corporate interests

The growing influence of corporate money in Sacramento -- from wealthy donors to corporate backed independent expenditures and political action committees (PACs) --  is making it harder and harder for California to lead as a model for the nation.

Assemblymember Gipson is part of the problem. While accepting corporate contributions, he has a record of voting against the desires and best interests of his constituents.

In fact, Asm. Gipson’s voting record ranks him as one of the LEAST progressive Democrats in the Assembly, but he represents one of the MOST progressive districts in the state.

Asm. Gipson has received substantial financial backing from oil giants such as Tesoro, Chevron, and many more. His lucrative relationship with Big Oil might explain why, despite representing Long Beach, one of the most polluted cities in California, he voted against two critical environmental bills (SB 32 and AB 356), that would have dramatically curbed carbon pollution and helped fight climate change.

Asm. Gipson also abstained from voting on a bill that would have curbed an unjust, racist policy called Civil Asset Forfeiture (SB 443), as well as a bill that would ensure better pay for those working on Thanksgiving (AB 67), among other legislation he opposed that would uphold the values of his constituents and the Democratic Party.

We must join together to hold him accountable.

SIGN THE PETITION TO TELL ASSEMBLYMEMBER MIKE GIPSON:

“I am appalled at the excessive influence corporations and the wealthy have in the halls of our state Capitol. Their priorities and profits are consistently placed over the well-being of everyday Californians. Based on what I’ve seen on The People’s Report Card of California, I believe that you are part of the problem. I respectfully ask you to stand up to these moneyed interests and demonstrate courage by representing your constituents, as well as the values of the Democratic Party.”
