Tell the California Legislature: STOP the corporate Cap & Trade bill!
The California Legislature is about to vote on a deeply flawed climate bill that won’t do enough to reduce carbon emissions, while also giving corporate polluters carte blanche to keep poisoning California’s cities -- with poor folks and communities of color paying the biggest toll.
Assembly Bill 398 -- a bill to extend CA's cap and trade system from 2020 to 2030 -- is stuffed with giveaways to Big Oil and other corporate polluters in order to court Republican support. But sources inside the Capitol report that the bill is vulnerable. We can kill this bill if enough Democrats vote no despite the intense political pressure to support it.
California can have a stronger carbon reduction strategy that shows the rest of the world what real climate leadership looks like, without forsaking California’s most vulnerable communities. But it will take our political leaders having the courage to defeat AB 398.
Below is the petition to the California Legislature, which reads:
“I urge you to vote NO on AB 398. Its deeply flawed approach to cap and trade may not only fail to reach California’s carbon emissions targets, but it may also lead to worse pollution in poor and minority communities by weakening regulatory bodies like the Air Resources Board. The world depends on California’s climate leadership. You must pass a bill that meets California’s emission reduction goals AND protects all of California’s communities. AB 398 does neither of these things.”
